The Potential of Traditional 1D Barcodes Being Replaced

Despite the rapid rise and adoption of 2D Barcodes, the traditional stripe barcode will not disappear ... in the short-medium term at least. Soon, we will start seeing a transitional period where the traditional 1D Barcode (which has been around for more than 50 years) starts appearing on products alongside the next generation 2D Barcodes, such as QR Codes.

2D Barcodes are currently working towards what we call a 'Global Sunrise Date' in 2027, which is the date that the retail industry will be able to scan these 2D Barcodes at point-of-sale. From that moment on, it is likely we will see greater levels of adoption for 2D Barcodes, but the traditional barcode is still going to be with us for a very long time.
